Plaited Double
The plaited double is a well-known knot amongst game and sportfishing anglers, as it retains close to 100% of the line's breaking strain. This is crucial when chasing line class records, ensuring the angler is using the line to it's full potential when fighting fish much heavier than the breaking strain.
1. Start by creating a loop in the line, then wrap the tag end under the main line and lay it in the centre of the loop. This creates the 3 strands that will be plaited.
2. Begin the plait by picking up the lower strand, and laying over the central strand, essentially swapping their position.
3. Now pick up the top strand, and lay it over the central one. The plait is created by continuing to alternately lay the lower and upper strand over the central one.
4. Continue plaiting the 3 strands in this pattern.
5. Make sure the strands are plaiting neatly as you go.
6. Make a plait 1-2 inches long for lighter lines, and 3-4 inches for heavier breaking strains. IMPORTANT: Ensure the plait ends with the tag end passing over the top strand into the centre of the original loop.
7. Take the tag end, and create a smaller loop by laying it over the bottom strand.
8. Pinch the end of the existing plait to keep it secure, and pass the upper strand over the smaller loop.
9. You will now be creating 4-5 more plaits, but using the new smaller loop as the third strand. Begin by passing the looped strand over the upper strand.
10. Continue this pattern to create 4-5 plaits. Ensure it ends with the looped strand at the bottom.
11. Bring the larger loop back over and through the smaller loop.
12. The knot is now ready to begin tightening. Moisten the line, supporting the plaits and pulling on the tag end of the line.
13. Slowly tighten the knot, which will pull the tag end through while closing the smaller loop and bedding down the plaits.
14. Trim the tag end neatly, and your plaited double is now ready to fish.
