31. High Tide Flathead

Many anglers struggle to catch flathead on the higher stages of the tide, so we have put together this Soft Plastics 101 chapter to assist anglers in breaking down their local banks in search of flathead.

When targeting flathead on the higher stages of the tide there are two main areas that we target -

1. Prime structure that flathead are unable to access on low tide and especially areas that attract and hold bait such as mangrove edges, lay down timber, weed beds, rock bars and man-made structure such as concrete walls, stormwater drains and bridges.

2. Drains that we fish the mouth of at low tide. Work back up into these drains on the higher stages of the tide as the fish will move up into these areas to feed.

Quality polarised sunglasses are a plus as they allow you to locate and fish the sandy pockets in amongst the weed beds, target the edges of the mangrove roots and other structure more effectively and also keep an eye out for bait moving in the area.

Paddle tail and curl tail plastics are a great starting point for targeting flathead, however jerkbaits, crustaceans, creature baits and more can also be effective.
